Welcome Ramadani: Baby White Rhino Born in Bogor Safari Park

Indonesia welcomes the rare baby white rhino in Bogor Safari Park.

Liputan6.com, Bogor - Indonesia welcomes the rare baby white rhinoceros at Bogor Safari Park, West Java. The calf was born on Friday around 07.59 PM local time.

The white rhino was born during a special occasion for the religious communities: Good Friday during Ramadan month.

As a result, the white rhino is named Ramadani Jumat Agung (literally: Ramadani Good Friday), nicknamed as Raja (King). Ramadani is a feminine form of the name Ramadan.

"The nickname is Raja because she was born during the Holy Month Ramadan 2023, precisely during the celebration of Good Friday," said the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Indonesian Rhinoceros Foundation, Lt. General (Ret.) Dodik Widjanarko in Safari Park on Saturday.

Ramadani's mother is a white african rhino named Juma. She is nearly 20-years-old. Juma married a male rhino, Merdeka, which is about her age.

Dodik explained the birth of Raja is a significant moment because the population of rhinoceros in Indonesia is under threat of extinction.

"In three months there will be another good news, a Sumatran rhinoceros in Way Kambas will be born," announced Dodik.

Waykambas is a national park in Bandar Lampung Province.

Head of Medical Animal at Indonesia Safari Park, Bongot Huaso Milia, revealed that Juma was carrying Ramadani for almost 16 months. Ramadani is reportedly in good condition.

"An hour after birth, (Ramadani) immediately stood and breastfed from her mother, Juma. This is an unusual condition. (Ramadani) is smarter than her older sister, Asyifa, who is almost three-years-old," said the vet.

Save Rhinos from Extinction

The Chairman of Indonesia Rhino Foundation and the founder of Safari Park in Bogor, Jansen Manansang, expressed his hope that the government and the public will support the efforts to save rhinoceros from extinction.

"We hope for the full support from the government and citizens to keep supporting the effort to conserve rhinos, especially Sumatran Rhino and Javanese Rhino," said Jansen.

Jansen said he is committed to sustain the population of rhinos in Indonesia, so the next generations can see these animals. With the birth of Ramadani, now there are six white rhinos in the Safari Park.

Although Ramadani is in good health, the medical team will keep an eye on her.

"We are on standby for 24 hours to observe her growth, as well as the provision of healthy foods, and the natural milk consumption from the mother are still our main attentions," said Bongot Huaso Milia.
