President Jokowi Will Attend Coldplay's First-Ever Concert in Indonesia

Coldplay's concert in Indonesia faces opposition from the Ulama Council of Indonesia (MUI).

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will attend the Coldplay's concert in Jakarta next November. Jokowi said he already got the ticket.

Coldplay will come to Indonesia as part of its Music of the Spheres World Tour. The president will come despite the opposition from the Ulama Council of Indonesia (MUI) which rejects Coldplay because the band advocates for the LGBT rights.

"That (I will) watch because already got the ticket," said President Jokowi to reporters at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Monday (5/6/2023).

President Jokowi is famous as a concert-goer. Previously, he attended the concerts of Deep Purple, Gun N' Roses, Metallica, and veteran South Korean boyband Super Junior.

The November concert will be Coldplay's first-ever concert in Indonesia. 1,7 million accounts were reportedly try to buy the tickets online. Meanwhile, the concert venue is the Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta which only has capacity for 77 thousand people.

Conservatives Oppose

The conservatives, including MUI, are opposing the concert because of Coldplay's stance in protecting LGBT rights. Chris Martin, the band's vocalist, has been proudly showing his support for the gay community for years.

The deputy leader of MUI, Anwar Abbas, previously said Coldplay's concert would ruin the morality of the people.

After the opposition, Minister for Tourism Sandiaga Uno explained that he would open discussion with the religious figures in the country. Sandiaga also said the concert would be beneficial for the local economy and tourism.
